Quarter Horses are also used for Quarter mile racing. Quarter mile racing first began in Virginia in 1607. From there on the sport was quickly adapted to, becoming very popular. The race track was marked at 400m, a quarter of a mile and was a flat and straight track. The racing was open to anyone who wanted to compete and it was not long after that horses started to be bred for running short distances. Quarter Horses are also called the Quarter Miler.
Quarter Horses timer starts directly as the race starts
unlike
thoroughbred horse racing = timer starts when horse has already run a few paces
as Quarter Horses can run at a standing start.
